Jack Layton (July 18, 1950 – August 22, 2011) was a prominent Canadian politician and leader of the New Democratic Party (NDP) from 2003 until his death in 2011. He served as the leader of the Official Opposition in 2011, after leading the NDP to an unprecedented victory in that year’s federal election.Layton was raised in Hudson, Quebec, the son of Progressive Conservative cabinet minister Robert Layton. He moved to Toronto, where he became a well-known figure in municipal politics, serving on both the Toronto City Council and the Metropolitan Toronto Council. Known for championing progressive causes, he led the Federation of Canadian Municipalities before turning his focus to federal politics.Elected leader of the NDP in 2003, Layton significantly boosted the party’s support in subsequent elections. Under his leadership, the NDP gained influence, including holding the balance of power in Paul Martin’s minority government after the 2004 election. The NDP achieved historic gains in the 2006 and 2008 elections, culminating in the 2011 election, where Layton led the party to its best result ever, winning 103 seats and becoming the Official Opposition.Tragically, Layton died of cancer just months after the 2011 election. He left behind a legacy of political passion, advocating for social justice and equality, and a message of hope that resonated with many Canadians. He was survived by his wife, Olivia Chow, who later became mayor of Toronto in 2023.
